The PowerBook Zone IRC

The Powerbook Zone staff can usually be found on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) on SlashNET's "#Macintosh" channel. IRC is a great real-time Internet chat protocol used by people all over the world. "SlashNET" is the particular IRC network, and "#macintosh"is the particular "channel" (analagous to a "chatroom"). PBZone chats will take place in "#pbzone" during regularly scheduled sessions, which will be noted on the main page. IRC can be intimidating to figure out at first, but follow these simple instructions to connect to the channel:

Getting Started

Mac users, download Ircle 3.0.4

Windows 32-bit users, download mIRC.

UNIX/Linux users, download ircII.

Once you have the client decompressed and installed , set your server as irc.slashnet.org (Ircle users, click here for the ircle 3.0 reference guide), and connect. Once you're connected to a SlashNET server, enter the following command:

/join #macintosh

...and you're ready to chat!

PBZone Chats

Follow the above instructions, except substituting /join #pbzone in the place of /join #macintosh. Our chats have not had to be moderated thus far, and we don't want to have to do that. so a few general courtesies would help the chat go a lot more smoothly:

  • Look at your Ircle settings. Change your 'nick', which is the name you're known by on IRC to something other than the default 'ircleuser'
  • We suggest getting there early for scheduled chats, learning the ropes, making sure everything's set up right, so there are less problems during the chat itself. We'll be in the channel all week to handle problems before the actual session actually takes place.
  • Other than that, there's not that many rules, try not to type in caps, keep discussion on topic, and everything should be perfect for a great chat.
