Monday, September 15th 2003 15:06 EDT New Portables at Paris Likely According to the report and images posted at 99Mac, the Apple booth has G5s, iMacs, and eMacs out in the open with covers over any portable products. The keynote is at 4 AM Eastern time and we'll be bringing you coverage as live as we can. Stay tuned! Thursday, September 11th 2003 11:57 EDT Booq Rejoins Advertiser Ranks; Offers Exclusive PBZone Discount We're happy to welcome Booq back as a PBZone.com advertiser. If you've got a generation two iPod, their ballistic nylon PodPaq014 is one of the most attractive protective covers we've seen yet. Also, our review of their FoleeMessenger17 can be read here. Thanks to Booq for supporting The PowerBook Zone and thanks to all of our readers for supporting our advertisers. The Rumor Mill Perhaps this week's introduction of new iPods and updated iMacs is to clear the air, so to speak, before a massive PR blitz for the introduction of PowerBooks at next week's Apple Expo in Paris. The rumor sites seem to think a new PowerBook is imminent--though their prognostication really isn't worth as much it was in the past. The Apple Store online lists a 3-5 day delay in shipping 17" PowerBooks. Since 3-5 days will put us right into the Apple Expo, we'll have to wait and see what happens there. Tuesday, September 9th 2003 14:42 Chicago-area School District Buys 5,200 iBooks Another school district has chosen to equip a vast group of students with their own Apple iBook. Details on the plan in suburban Chicago school District 54 can be found here. The purchase of 5,200 laptops is believed to be the largest ever for a school district in Illinois. The deal is worth $6.6 million to Apple. Monday, September 8th 2003 12:49 10 Million Songs Sold, New iMacs, New iPods....But No New PowerBooks Apple continues to torture the Apple portable faithful that don't want a 12 or 17" PowerBook with several new product announcements today that don't include an midsize PowerBook. In case you haven't seen the news, there are iMacs up to 1.25 GHz, iPods up to 40 GB (that's one month of music without ever repeating), and the announcement that the iTunes Music Store has blasted ten million songs into cyberspace. Now the 12 and 17" models are 9 months old, having been introduced at Macworld Expo in January. The 15" PowerBooks are practically dinosaurs by Apple product cycle standards, as we near the one year anniversary of the "SuperDrive" update in November of 2002. The 15" model's form factor hasn't changed since almost way back in the 20th century, as it was introduced on January 9th, 2001. So what now, faithful PowerBook users? Many must be thinking "we've waited this long, what's a couple more months?" Our eyes are now on the next two big Apple events, Apple Expo in Paris next week and then all the way in January for Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Hopefully we'll see something next week--if not, we can't imagine the company waiting until January. As always, we'll keep you posted. |
