Mac OS X 10.2.1, iTunes 3.0.1 Released

Apple has released the first update for Jaguar with 10.2.1. This update smooths over several of the minor problems encountered in Jaguar and really makes it purr. For the full low down on all the changes, check out the AppleCare Knowledge Base article on the subject. The update can be downloaded via Software Update or downloaded manually here. It weighs in at 17.1 megabytes.

Apple's audio application iTunes has also been updated to 3.0.1 and can also be found via Software Update. This update does not require Jaguar, but improves Jaguar support and performance when running on Mac OS X 10.2. You can read about the new iTunes and download it here.

There will be another update later today, but for now check out MacLinkage.com for more great Mac news.

Buy Our FireWire Enclosures

Our latest batch of 2.5" FireWire hard disk drive enclosures came to us with a vendor asking us to buy out the stock he had left. Perhaps we overestimated the demand for the enclosures, as we still have over 50 of them available. So we're going to drop the price to $70 plus shipping, a fantastic price for an attractive Oxford 911-based 2.5" enclosure. We'll give a free enclosure to anyone who can find a better price on this enclosure elsewhere. Furthermore, we're going to again offer fully-assembled external drives using IBM Travelstar disk drives, the best available.

We've priced these at $190 for the 20 GB size, $230 for the 40 GB size, and the best price to be found anywhere for the 60 GB, $415. To find out more details on these and how to buy, check out their page here. The enclosure kits at their new price can be found here.

All these products come with a one year warranty and our complete satisfaction guarantee. We've shipped over 300 products over the last year and a half and we think these are the best prices and products available.

iTunes for X Updated to 3.0.1

iTunes for Mac OS X has been updated to version 3.0.1. It's available via Software Update. No notes on what's changed are available yet.

DVD Burner Issues with High Speed Media

If you've got a "SuperDrive" DVD burner, read the top story here. Pioneer has a fix out for their drives, but Apple hasn't reacted yet for the Pioneer drives that are included in the iMac and PowerMac G4.

PBG4 Keyboard Lighted Keys

A reader pointed out this site, which is selling a lighting system that fits under the keyboard of PowerBook G4 PowerBook to illuminate the keyboard for typing in the dark.

Jaguar Upgrade Experiences

Well, we keep receiving Jaguar upgrade experiences. So we'll keep publishing them.

In response to the guy who installed Jaguar on a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet (Sonnet WS G3/500Mhz) and said he had nothing but trouble:

I've got exactly the same gear. No problems at all. Jaguar is great!

I have a TiPB 667 MHz with 1 gig of RAM and installed OS X 10.2 on top of 10.1.5. The upgrade went smoothly although it was a bit long - about 20 minutes. Yes, overall everything's faster. Classic runs legacy applications satisfactorily.

The only disappointment, a personal one, is that my UMAX FireWire scanner Model 6400 does not have an OS X driver and UMAX has no plans to release one. So I'm still stuck in 9.2.2 just because I need to use the scanner. The UMAX scanner I got for a song and the new FireWire scanners from Epson and UMAX runs $399 and up.

The biggest new feature for me is to be able to connect to the hundreds of Windows PCs doing their file-sharing thing at the office via TCP/IP using the Connect To feature. It's not as visually appealing as Chooser but it works and that's count a lot to me. Thanks, Apple. Better late than never!

Broken Screen PowerBooks

A reader in the UK writes:

What's all this about ?

I dropped my powerbook from a great height last Sunday, and have smashed the screen. So I did a search across the web to see where I could get it fixed. Your site came up with reference to smashed screen PowerBooks.

The power book still works, like a dream... Just the cracks in the middle a getting on my nerves after working with it for a few days.

Anyway if you, know where I could get the screen fixed in the UK, please drop me a line.

We're posting this because it's a common question. We'd like two reader responses here: one from readers in the UK who have had screens repaired there. Where's the best place to go? The cheapest?

For readers in the United States and elsewhere, what experiences have you had with broken screens and repairs? There are several services in the United States alone and we'd like to hear your experiences with them. Again, what's the cheapest you could find to repair your PowerBook? Send us your comments to info@pbzone.com.
